How To Pair Sonos Speakers to Phone? (iPhone & Android)

Sonos speakers are usually connected via Wi-Fi, so pairing them with a Bluetooth device is harder. So, how to do it?

To pair Sonos with an iPhone, put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode, use the official application, or use Airplay. All Sonos speakers support Bluetooth and will pair with other devices.

However, if the speaker is in Bluetooth mode, it won’t be able to connect with other speakers via Wi-Fi.

How to Pair Sonos Speakers to a Phone?

The method you will use depends on your phone. For iPhones, you can use Bluetooth pairing, Airplay, cast, or the official application.

For Android phones, you can use Bluetooth or the official application. Android phones don’t support Airplay or cast.

1. Use Bluetooth Pairing

Did you know that Sonos has Bluetooth features and can connect to any device that supports Bluetooth? To do so, you must put the speaker into pairing mode so it can get discovered and pair with other devices.

Sonos Roam: To put Sonos roam speakers into pairing mode, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds or until you hear two beeps from the speakers.

The LED (or indicator) light will have a flashing blue light when in pairing mode. If the LED light isn’t flashing or has a steady blue light, it means the speaker is already paired with another device. If the LED light is white, the speaker is in wireless mode.

Sonos Move: To put Sonos Move speakers into pairing mode, press the “Wireless and Bluetooth” button (at the back of the speaker) once. The LED light at the top of the speaker will be a flashing blue.

iPhone:

1. Turn on the speaker and put it into pairing mode (using the steps above).
2. Unlock your phone and go to Settings > Bluetooth.
3. Turn on the Bluetooth.
4. Wait a few seconds for the phone to scan for nearby devices.
5. Find the Sonos Speaker in the list and press it once.

Android:

1. Put the speaker into pairing mode.
2. Unlock your phone and go to Settings > Bluetooth or Connected Devices.
3. Find the speaker in the list and press it once.

Note: While the Sonos speaker is in Bluetooth mode, it won’t be able to pair with other speakers or use its Wireless features. It will act as a normal Bluetooth speaker and play sounds from the phone.

To put the speaker back into its Wireless mode, press the Bluetooth button at the back (Sonos Move) once, or press the power button for 2 seconds or beeps (Sonos Roam).

2. Use Airplay (iPhone)

You can use Sonos speakers to play music from your iPhone using its Airplay 2 feature.

Airplay is a wireless communication protocol that allows different devices (with similar metadata) to share audio, video, or other files with each other.

You can use it to share music with one, two, or more Sonos speakers simultaneously. For this to work, the iPhone and the Sonos must be connected to the same Wi-Fi.

To use Airplay:

1. Put the Sonos speaker into Wi-Fi mode (it must have a steady white light).
2. Unlock your iPhone and open Control Center (swipe down from the top of the screen).
3. Press the AirPlay icon at the top left.
4. Choose the speakers you want to play music from.
5. Start playing music.

3. Use the Sonos App

You can download the official application of Sonos on your iPhone or Android and use it to connect with your phone.

It allows you to control, choose, and play different music from different sources, including Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, and more.

To use it:

1. Download the application on your phone.
2. Connect the phone and the speaker with the same Wi-Fi.
3. Open the application and add your speakers to it (if you haven’t already).
4. Play music from the application and choose which Sonos speaker you want to use (you can use multiple).

Tip: The application will do much more than this. Explore and use it as it helps you control the speakers and customize them.

4. Cast

Most Sonos speakers are compatible with cast. However, this only works with iPhones and with some limited applications.

At this moment, Spotify is working perfectly with cast, but Youtube isn’t. So, you must find compatible apps for this to work.

To use it:

1. Connect your iPhone and Sonos to the same Wi-Fi.
2. Open Spotify and press the cast icon (small TV with three Bluetooth lines over it).
3. Choose which speaker you want to use.

Note: You can only pair one speaker with this method. If you want to pair multiple speakers use the Sonos App. Also, Sonos doesn’t support Chromecast, so it will only work for iPhones.
